Cost of Brewing Beer...

A decent startup kit can run $80-$120, but will include your first kit for making 5 gallons of beer.

Additional ingredient kits run from the simple, pre-hopped malt kits costing $20 to custom partial mash kits costing $50-$60. Figure on spending about $40 for a decent kit at your local homebrew supply store. You can cut costs by buying bulk, also available at your local hbs, or online (but be prepared to fork out shipping).

Yeast culturing kits are available for around $30-$50 and will cut the cost of buying slap packs at $3-$5 per 5 gallons over time. (Hint: Ask for one of these for your birthday!) Also, you can grow your own hops! You won't know what the alpha-acid content (a measure of bitterness) is unless you have them tested at a lab, but chances are they will fall into a reasonable range and will be quite usable.

Kegging kits cost around $180-$250 and include one keg, one CO2 bottle, fittings and faucet. You also will need a kegerator to keep the beer cold. Kegerators run $450-$600! (I bought a used full-sized fridge for $100 and made my own...I keep fish and game in the freezer section, jam too!) Additional kegs cost about $30-$40. (Bottles are free at the recycling center!)

All-Grain units like the one featured on the index page of this site are very expensive...but cool! (Think Christmas!)
